Mexico

  • To what extent are the elitist and hierarchical tendencies of Mexican politics found in liberal democracies?
  • What bringing Mexico into a free-trade agreement with the United States and Canada a good idea or a bad idea for the three countries? Why?
  • Mexican corporatism brings various social actors (e.g., labor, business professionals) into an officially sanctioned ruling coalition.  While guaranteeing certain privileges for these groups (e.g., job security for unionized labor and subsides for businesses), it also limits such freedoms as choosing when to strike or how to allocate capital.  Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of such arrangements.

  1. Bringing Mexico into the free-trade is a good idea because trade between the three countries will greatly increase. Because of this the economies of the three countries will also increase because more of each country's manufactured goods will be circulated through the other countries. This also means that manufacturing in all of these countries will increase. One of the biggest pros for the U.S. is now they can get more oil from the Mexico and not have to rely on getting oil from the Middle East. This is especially important because the U.S. has been involved in many armed conflicts in the Middle East because they are trying to protect their oil interest. Not relying on the Middle East means that the U.S. will be involved in less conflicts over oil. So all around it is a good idea for every country.

    1. I like how you looked into the conflicts over oil in the Middle East. If the US can lower its cost in war and look at the valuable imports from near, it could save millions of dollars. The only problem I see is the US tends to be an all or nothing, and this can cause for another enemy to be created instead of a friendly neighbor.

    2. Since Mexico is one of the U.S.'s neighbors it is perfect and so smart for the U.S. to deal trades with them instead of nations further away. Also, we have had conflicts in the Middle East and still issues surrounding those conflicts. Being in trade with Mexico would be the smartest move for us because it is a closer source for oil than Middle Eastern nations and easier to trade with them since we are neighbors. I agree with your post Bryce.

  2. When you bring Mexico into the trade agreement with the United States and Canada the trade between the countries increase by a large amount. The three countries can trade many different goods in order to get more goods for their country. They will exchange many things from materials to manufactured goods to help their countries. The Middle-East is who supplies the U.S. but with Mexico being so much closer we can trade with them in order to get the oil we need and would not cost us near as much to transport. With the trade being on the West side of the world it keeps all these countries from entering conflicts with other nations when trying to get goods for their people. I think that having the trade for all three countries is very smart and would benefit the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

    1. I agree that it is a smart move for the U.S. because we now have a closer supplier for oil and it saves millions of dollars. This would also help to keep the U.S. out of so many conflicts with the Middle East. Overall I think this is a smart move because we now have a closer supplier of oil and a trade partner that is much less volatile than the Middle East.

    2. I agree with the points you have made. I think bringing oil into your response was a good seeing as how transportation costs most likely play a big factor into what the United States does and does not import.

  3. It would benefit the U.S. to bring Mexico into the trade with them and Canada because all three countries could get their goods quicker. With the three countries being so close to each other they could depend on one another to get the manufactured goods that they need. It could also cause less conflict with other countries because there have been many cases to where the United States were involved in conflict by the resources they need. For example the United States get their oil from the Middle East, this causes conflict because the Middle East wants to protect their oil. The United States could get Mexico's oil if they brought them into the trade and not have to worry about conflicts in the future. The price of a lot of things would also decrease if we got oil from Mexico rather than the Middle East because we a using less transportation to get the oil to the United States, so the cost of things will decrease. By bringing in Mexico to the trade it would create more manufacturing jobs for the United States, the more manufacturing trades there are the increase in jobs. I believe that it would be a good idea to bring Mexico into the trade with the United States and Canada.

  4. The North American Free Trade Agreement is a substantial benefit for all three North American countries involved. The inclusion specifically of Mexico provided both the United States and Canada with a very viable trade partner, and provided Mexico with a sustainable and affordable source of goods from its Western cultural partners. "NAFTA boosted trade by eliminating all tariffs between the three countries. It also created agreements on international rights for business investors. That reduced the cost of commerce. It also spurred investment and growth." (The Hidden Benefits of NAFTA, Kimberly Amadeo, 2018). Mexico's export capabilities have increased and the cost of importing has decreased. Mexico also has two ready and willing partners who are preferred trade partners who give Mexican produced goods priority. Partnership with the United States and Canada, two G7 countries, has provided Mexico with the means and influence to become a global trade partner instead of the smaller, much more isolated regional associate it had been in the past.

    1. I agree with you that it would benefit all three countries in entering a free trade agreement. They all already enter trade with one another on a regular and preferred basis so it makes since to enter into the agreement. I think that it would save the U.S. and Canada some money based on how much they buy from Mexico. As well as bring down the cost for Mexico by possibly allowing them to get more goods from the U.S. and Canada.

  5. Per 2016 statistics, the United States and Mexico are each other's second largest export and import market. In other words, the United States buy a lot of stuff from Mexico and Mexico buys a lot of stuff from the United States. Seems like a fair agreement at first glance; however, the United States seems to be buying more from Mexico than Mexico is buying from them. In fact, the U.S. buys $294.2 billion worth of goods from Mexico while Mexico only buys $231 billion worth of goods from the United States. This leaves the U.S. with a $63.2 billion deficit. (https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/americas/mexico) Per 2012 statistics, Canada buys $25.5 billion worth of goods from Mexico and Mexico buys $5.4 billion worth of goods from Canada. This leaves Canada with a $20.1 billion deficit over Mexico. (https://lop.parl.ca/Content/LOP/ResearchPublications/2013-46-e.htm) With that being said, it would be smart for the United States and Canada to enter a free trade agreement with Mexico. Entering this agreement would bring down spending in all three countries as well as bring down the deficit that the U.S. and Canada have with their trade in Mexico. As for Mexico, they are making more money than they are spending; so, they may not want to enter a free trade agreement based on that fact.

  6. Bringing Mexico into a fair trade agreement with the United States and Canada was a good idea. The United States trades the most with China and the two countries behind them are Canada and Mexico. Being in a fair trade agreement allows all three countries to benefit from one another, which can only result in making more money off of the goods they export and also made trade between the countries cheaper by getting rid of tariffs and increasing competition. The fair trade agreement also created more job opportunities.

    1. I agree with your thoughts that bringing Mexico into a free trade agreement was a good idea. The benefits gained through this agreement have greatly influenced the countries involved and their economies. " Three countries became the largest free market in the world-;the combined economies of the three nations at that time measured $6 trillion and directly affected more than 365 million people." 7. Bringing Mexico into a free-trade agreement with the United States and Canada was a good idea because it improves economies. However, a lot of people see it as negative because many corporations have moved their factories to Mexico because of cheap labor. I believe the CEO's of these companies are to blame because it is their decision, not the United States' decision. The trade agreement just makes it easier for them to have access to Mexico and Canada for trading etc. Mexico also provides a lot of valuable exports into the United States. There is a lot of controversy when it comes to NAFTA, but overall, I believe it is a good trade agreement.

  8. Bringing Mexico into the free trade agreement was a good idea, just like everywhere else, Mexico have goods we cannot find in the united states. Allowing them to purchase and sell goods is a huge positive for the economy. Opening the doors to businesses can help and hurt, although companies may bring jobs over borders, they also open the opportunity to provide imported goods for a cheaper price as it can be built in the United States. I believe the NAFTA is a good agreement for all 3 countries.
