Britain

  • Is the British prime minister more powerful than the president of the United States, or vice versa? Is Parliament prime minister more powerful than Congress, or vice versa?
  • How does the power of the prime minister compare with that of the U.S. president?
  • Given a choice between serving as the president of the United States or as the prime minister of Great Britain, which job would you prefer? Why?

  1. The President of the United States holds many solitary and shared powers once he/she is elected to office. The president serves as commander and chief of the armed forces and as a commission officer for the armed forces. He/she also may grant pardons for federal offenses and convene congress in special sessions. The president can also receive ambassadors, take care that laws be executed, use "executive power", and appoint officials to lesser offices. The powers that the president shares with Senate are making treaties and appointing ambassadors, judges, and high officials. The president also shares the power to approve legislation with the congress as a whole. (https://votesmart.org/education/president#.Wqgi8maZPoA)
The British Prime Minister, however, has few roles when compared to the United States President. His/her powers include appointing chairs and cabinents, ratifying or making major decisions, planning parliamentary business, arbitrating between departments, and coordinating government (Kesselman, Kreiger, Joseph 58). Although it seems as if the US president and the Britain Prime Minister have similar powers in government. The Prime Minister may hae more control over the government as a whole because he/she appoints a lot more people by his/herself. Whereas, the president can only appoint a few people and must have approval of the legislative body. Also, the Prime Minister may have more influence over the people than the president does.

  2. The president is more powerful than the prime minister. Presidents have greater executive than the prime minister. This is due to the separation of powers in the government. The executive branch is not tied to the legislative like it is in a parliamentary system. The prime minister must keep a majority in legislature in order to stay in power. If this does not happen then a vote of confidence can be taken and the prime minister could lose their position. The president does not have this issue and the only way they can be removed from office is if they is to be impeached which has never happened so they are virtually untouchable while in office. Since they are separated from the legislature, the president has the most individual power. The prime minister's power is defined by their standing in legislature and since both branches are conjoined, there is very little individual power that the prime minister possesses that is separate from legislature.

  3. The biggest difference between these two roles is the prime minister is considered the "head of government" while the president is considered to be the "head of state" (wonderopolis.org) The president has more overall power and is the leader of the country whereas the prime minister is just the leader of the government (wonderopolis.org). The president is the representative of the people and overall holds more power and responsibility, however the prime minister has more direct power over the government (wonderopolis.org).

  4. If I had to decide who has more power I would say the president has more power than the Prime Minster because once the president is elected they control who they want in their cabinets and it is divided with the separation of powers. There are three branches in the government that help the president make decisions but like the Prime Minister the president makes the final decisions. The Prime minster is considered to be the head of the government and if he doesn't make the right decisions then he can be taken out by the people, where the president can only be taken out by the senate. Even though you can argue that the president has more power than the prime minster they each have different powers so you can't really compare the two.

    1. I agree with your points that the president has more overall power than the prime minister. The president is considered the "head of state" and holds more responsibilities than the prime minister which is only considered the "head of government." They have extremely different roles so it is hard to compare the two, but because of their overall duties within their countries, some can argue that the president holds more power.

  5. I would choose be the prime minister of the United Kingdom over the president of the United States due to the fact that the prime minister's responsibilities only deal with just the country's government, unlike the president who takes responsibility for all aspects of the country. Each role is very demanding, but I feel like being able to dedicate all my energy and resources to only the government would lead to better results and functionality.

    1. I like your point of view, not much of how much power will be in your hand but looking at the task given. I like how you looked for the one that would give you the best chance at accomplishing your goals. I think many people can get blinded by the power given.

  6. I believe that the President of the United States has more power than the Prime Minister. In Parliament, the Prime Minister must keep the approval of the majority and in theory Congress can impeach a President, even though it is much more difficult to impeach a President. In both systems there is a system of checks and balances that monitors the legislative and executive powers. The President is known to be more powerful globally because of the United States's position as a world super power. The Prime Minister does hold power in how he appoints people because the President must go through Congress and get their approval before they are appointed. The President is the head of State and the Prime Minister is the head of government and they share a lot of the same power and importance within their governments.

    1. I agree that the President has more power than the Prime Minister. Since the President is "head of state" he/she has a lot more responsibilities and control over the country as a whole, not just the government side of it. Whereas the Prime Minister being "head of government", he/she is only responsible for the government of the country. Also, if the majority of Parliament does not agree with the Prime Minister's decisions, they can remove him from office fairly easily. If Congress does not agree with the President's decisions, they have the power to impeach him/her; but, it is a much more lengthy and difficult process.

  7. The President would have more power than a prime Minister if you were to compare them side by side but I never compare them because their roles to society and their country's are much different. The president is helped out by their three branches in the government to make decisions on topics and ideas. The people of the nation can choose to over rule the prime minister but the President may not be over ruled by the people. They can be over ruled by what the senate and government branches are saying.

  8. I would have to go with the job as president of the United States. For one, I am from the United States and I love America. I feel like it would be a great opportunity to carry on the American tradition and keep pushing America towards the right direction. Coming from a small town, I feel as if I could represent the rural people in a great way as well as lead the suburban areas in a productive way. Sitting in the Oval Office would surely have its benefits too I am sure. It would be very interesting leading the US and I think it would be very cool having the secret service protect you at all times. There are tons of benefits I am sure that the president of the US gets and that would be a very detailed job with tons of responsibility. I think having that power and authority would be very intense and I could really help make a difference in the world as well as our nation.

  9. I agree with you that being the president would be a pretty cool job that would come with a lot of awesome perks. But at the same time it would be a very stressful job as well. The president is one of the most powerful people in the world and the decisions that he makes affects the entire world. That is a lot of pressure that is on one person.
